Finally, a few heroes in sports

AFTER the bleak news of the last few weeks, Malaysia's sportsmen finally gave the country something to cheer about on Sunday.

First, Nicol David (pix) capped a great week by clinching the squash World Open in Hongkong, beating former World No. 1 Rachael Grinham, of Australia, in four sets.

Earlier, by qualifying for the final, Nicol had assured herself of the World No. 1 ranking from Jan 1.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said he was proud of Nicol's achievement. He said all Malaysians, particularly the country's sportsmen, should emulate her.

There was more good news on the SEA Games front. The Malaysian squad had won 61 golds -- surpassing the 55-gold medal target.

Abdullah also expressed delight with the performance of the Malaysian contingent.

See our sports pages for more reports on Nicol and the SEA Games medal winners.
