KUALA LUMPUR (July 23, 2007): Umno today lodged a police report against weblog Malaysia-Today (malaysia-today.net) over postings which allegedly condemned the King and Islam.
At about noon, Umno information bureau chief Tan Sri Muhammad Muhd Taib led about 30 party members to the Dang Wangi district police headquarters to lodge the report.
Speaking later, he said a July 11 posting which allegedly contained criticisms and name-calling against the King. He mentioned several excerpts from the postings in the police report.
Muhammad said the weblog, owned and moderated by Raja Petra Kamarudin, had also posted comments which insulted Islam and also invoked other statements which could provoke racial sentiments.
"This is blatant disrespect to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and insensitivity to Islam and the races in this country," he said.
"We cannot just ignore this. We urge the police to investigate and take action against the website. Such postings can be detrimental to the nation, especially the younger generation.
"Can you imagine what it can do to the people? It can incite youngsters to hate the country and also fan racial disunity among the different races.
"Maybe they (malaysia-today.net) forgot that there are many sensitivities in this country. Such people want to destroy the peace in the country. The postings are criminal in nature and pose a national threat."
Muhammad pointed out that there were other seditious postings in the website in the past, but this time, Umno could no longer turn a blind eye.
Dang Wangi police chief ACP Mohd Zulkarnain Abdul Rahman said police will study the report before deciding on the next course of action. "We will have to establish the offences committed before classifying it (the report)."
A check of the website did not show up the alleged offensive postings. The website also appeared to be slow due to high web traffic after the Umno report.
Raja Petra Kamarudin could not be reached for comments.
(Updated: When reached for comments on Monday night, Raja Petra said any comments which he wished to make regarding this matter had been posted in his website.)
