Pole dancing is a cool way to keep fit, writes Soo Wern Jun

For
many years, pole dancing has been largely confined to dimly-lit bars and night clubs. While some still think of it as "indecent", many others are practising it to maintain body fitness.

It is no doubt an effective exercise that keeps the body in shape although the idea of going for a pole dancing class may seem utterly bizarre. Tracing back to its origins in Canada and later practised in London, this fitness concept made its debut in Malaysia early this year.

"The initial process of clearing stereotypes of pole dancing wasn’t easy. It’s my eighth year in the fitness and dance industry. I can definitely say that the concept has gained a more positive response from society," said Vivian Lea, founder of Viva Vertical.

This fitness dance is done in two forms - the Fit Pole and Exotic Pole.

Inspired by gyms and fitness centres, the fit pole combines pole oriented cardiovascular, strength training and choreographed steps to increase stamina, burn calories, improve muscle tone (muscle sculpting) and building core strength.

For those who prefer expression elements, they can go for the exotic pole. Inspired by women for women where the programme combines sensuality of burlesque (artistic theatrical style), confidence cabaret with pole oriented dance choreography to improve coordination and burn calories.

"At the mention of pole dancing, you would start imagining women stripping off their clothes. It’s a totally wrong perception as my students are all dressed in proper exercise or yoga attire during classes. There’s no removing of clothes!" explained Lea.

Pole dancing is not just a different kind of dance style, it also works as a good body-toning exercise. The dance helps tone abs, define a better figure, including your arms, shoulders and legs. It also encourages flexibility.

"If you are afraid and wondering if this fitness concept is safe for you, it is certified by the Asian Academy for Sports and Fitness Professionals (AASFP), added Lea.

Classes offered at Viva Vertical range from beginner to advanced levels, which consist of fit pole, exotic pole, exotic groove, dancer training and instructor training.

Viva Vertical, a partner of Talent Hub Dance Studio, is at 19-2, Prisma Ville, Jalan 19/70A, Desa Sri Hartamas.
