King of Tennis inquiry findings to be made public next month
Bernard Cheah

Jagdeep Singh Deo

GEORGE TOWN (Nov 24, 2008) :
The state Public Accounts Committee (PAC) hopes to wrap up its inquiry into the failure of the Kings of Tennis event, and make public its findings next month.

PAC chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said today evidence and testimonies are being gathered on the affair since the closed-door inquiry began last Friday.

Those who have been questioned include event organiser Arianna Teoh, tourism dvelopment, culture, arts and heritage committee chairman Danny Law Heng Kiang, and officials from the Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP).

"We want to investigate thoroughly to see what actually happened, and if there are any procedural flaws,” Jagdeep said.

He said the enquiry was also concerned about any losses to the MPPP due to the installation of a concrete court on the field.

The next session of the inquiry will be held on Thursday.

The PAC panel includes both Pakatan Rakyat and Barisan Nasional assemblymen.

Jagdeep also promised to make the findings public after they have been submitted to the state government.

A check today showed that the spectator stands at the field were still being dismantled, with the concrete court yet to be removed.

The Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP) had issued a legal letter to the organiser on Nov 14, directing that the stands and court be removed, and grass replanted within 14 days from the issuance of the letter. The deadline ends this Friday.
