‘No reckless clearing in Botanic Gardens’

GEORGE TOWN (Nov 24, 2008) : The clearing of land in the Botanic Gardens for the eco-stream walk does not involve cutting down trees.

“Only the bushes and undergrowth were cleared so that we could level the land and reinforce the river banks,”  Penang Botanic Gardens Department director Nor Wahida Hassan said today.

She was commenting on a statement by the Penang branch of the Malaysian Nature Society that work on the eco-stream walk involved “extensive clearing of vegetation”.

Nor Wahida told theSun the department had to make sure the surface was even for the safety of visitors.

“We also need to put in reinforcement matting to ensure the banks are secure and then we will replant the area with grass,” she said.

“This 300m eco-stream walk is expected to be completed by the end of next month.”

The eco-stream walk will follow the stream, which flows from the Botanic Gardens nursery past the bambusetum (formerly Coronation Camp) and on to a parking area on Waterfall Road.

Nor Wahida said phase two of the bambusetu, which is to plant exotic bamboos, is expected to begin by January. Phase one, involving walkways and bamboo plots, has been completed.

The bambusetum will feature up to 80 species of bamboo sourced locally and from other countries.
The bambusetum and eco-stream walk are part of a RM7 million expansion plan for the Botanic Gardens, to be funded by the Tourism Ministry under the Ninth Malaysia Plan.

The other features of the expansion incloude a garden mall, water garden and tourist pavilion.
Nor Wahida had said the expansion is expected to be completed by 2010.

On Sunday, Kanda Kumar, chairman of the Penang branch of the MNS, said the original proposal did not involve extensive clearing of vegetation and that the project seemed “rushed”.
