Penang told to study impact of projects at heritage sites
Giam Say Khoon
Development for a 51 metre hotel building by Boustead Holdings Bhd along Weld Quay, in George Town's Unesco heritage zone. | KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 25, 2008) : Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal today said the Penang government has been told to conduct an impact study on developments in heritage sites to ensure they will not affect the World Heritage status awarded by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (Unesco).
Following a “warning” by Unesco that Penang could lose its newly-acquired status because four high-rise hotels were being built in the heritage zone, Shafie said he had met with the state government on the matter on Monday.
He said the state will work with the ministry as well as Unesco representatives and the developers to determine the impact of the developments in a month.
“The recognition for the two states including Malacca as World Heritage Sites was not done separately but because of the historical Straits of Malacca shared by the two states.
“So we must ensure that there will be no disqualification because if Penang loses its status, Malacca will also lose its too,” he told a press conference at parliament lobby today.
However, Shafie said the impact study does not mean that there should be no development in that area as informed by Unesco as renovation and preservation work can still be carried out.
“I have told Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng that we must maintain and ensure that (the World Heritage title stays) as it is not only good for the state but the nation as well. So we must work closely together,” he added.
Asked if the development projects will be stopped, Shafie said he did not want to jump to any conclusion as there are many options but it may be the last resort.
“We need the cooperation of all developers. I advise the state government officers to talk to the developers and I think we can work it out,” he said.
