Political chronology of events in Perak
KUALA LUMPUR: Following are the chronology of events of the Perak political scene since March last year.
March 9, 2008:
-- A coalition of DAP, Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) and PAS under Pakatan Rakyat (PR) form the Perak state government after winning 31 of the 59 state assembly seats while Barisan Nasional (BN) won the 28 remaining seats in the March 8 General Election.
March 17, 2008:
-- Pasir Panjang state assemblyman Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin from PAS takes oath as Perak Mentri Besar.
March 19, 2008:
-- Swearing in ceremony for 10 state executive council members takes place at Istana Iskandariah, Kuala Kangsar.
March 25, 2008:
-- Two state EXCO members Jamaluddin Mohd Radzi and Capt (rtd) Mohd Osman Jailu were produced at the Session's Court for alleged corruption charges involving a RM180 million housing development project. The court has set Feb 10, 11 and 12 to hear the case.
Jan 25, 2009:
-- Bota state assemblyman from Umno Datuk Nasaruddin Hashim declared he was leaving Barisan Nasional (BN) and joined PKR.
Jan 26, 2009:
-- Perak Menteri Besar claims three more state assemblymen from Umno would follow in the footsteps of Nasaruddin and join PKR.
Jan 28, 2009:
-- Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim proposes time frame for Nasaruddin to vacate seat for a by-election to be held.
Jan 29, 2009:
--Umno Supreme Council receives letter from former Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Tajol Rosli Ghazali that he was resigning as Perak Umno Liaison chairman with immediate effect. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak takes over as Perak Barisan Nasional chairman and Perak Umno liaison chairman.
Jan 30, 2009:
-- Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin deny reports that Jamaluddin Mohd Radzi (Behrang) and Capt (rtd) Mohd Osman Mohd Jailu (Changkat Jering), would leave Parti Keadilan Rakyat and join BN.
Feb 1, 2009:
-- Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi hints a number of state assemblymen in Perak may join BN.
-- Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin requests Jamaluddin and Mohd Osman who disappeared since Jan 26, to declare their stand to state if they were leaving Pakatan Rakyat Perak.
-- Perak State Legislative Assembly speaker V. Sivakumar said he had received resignation letters from Behrang assemblyman Jamaluddin Mat Radzi and Changkat Jering state assemblyman Mohd Osman Jailu in his house at 5.45pm.
-- Both Jamaluddin and Mohd Osman deny they had resigned and claimed the undated letter was signed together with six other PKR assemblymen, agreeing to vacate their seats if they left PKR.
Feb 2, 2009:
-- Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin has an audience with Perak Sultan at Istana Kinta but does not reveal why he met the Sultan.
-- Perak State Legislative Assembly speaker V. Sivakumar notifies Perak Election Commission director that Behrang and Changkat Jering state seats were vacant.
-- Perak PKR chairman Osman Abdul Rahman said both Jamaluddin and Mohd Osman did not announce that they are leaving PKR.
-- A representative of Jamaluddin Mohd Radzi informs the media in Sepang that Jamaluddin was still a PKR member.
-- A representative of Mohd Osman Jailu tells the media in Shah Alam that Mohd Osman did not resign.
Feb 3, 2009:
-- Election Commission decide that (N14) Changkat Jering and (N59) Behrang state seats are not vacant and by-election not required.
-- Jamaluddin Mohd Radzi declares himself an independent state assemblyman after PKR forwards a letter to Perak State Legislative Assembly speaker V. Sivakumar that he had resigned.
-- Perak DAP chairman Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham gives Election Commission 48-hour ultimatum to review decision.
Feb 4, 2009:
-- Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin announces Perak state assembly would be dissolved; awaiting consent from Perak Sultan.
-- Mohd Osman Jailu, Datuk Nasarudin Hashim (Bota) and Hee Yit Foong (Jelapang) are in the Deputy Prime Minister's office in Putrajaya.
-- Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak announces that BN Perak have the numbers to form the government in Perak as three PKR and a DAP
state assemblyman are not members of their respective parties. Perak now comprises 28 BN seats and 28 Pakatan Rakyat seats and three independent seats.
-- Mohamad Nizar, who had an audience with the Sultan of Perak to seek his consent to dissolve the state assembly, leaves Istana Kinta without informing the media of the outcome.
Feb 5, 2009:
-- Najib Razak and Perak Umno deputy chief Ahmad Zahid Hamidi have an audience with Sultan of Perak twice, the second time with all BN assemblyman, a defector who was rejoining Umno and three "BN-friendly" independents.
-- Perak Speaker applies to High Court to declare resignation letters of the three former PKR and DAP assemblyman as valid and that their seats are vacant.
-- Sultan of Perak issues statement that Mohammad Nizar and been told to resign with the entire state exco with immediate effect.
-- Police cordon off state secretariat building
-- Mohammad Nizar says he will not resign
-- Umno president Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi announces that Pangkor assemblyman Datuk Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir will be new MB.
