FACE-OFF....Umno vice-president contestant Datuk Seri
Syed Hamid Albar meets a "Syed Hamid 05" campaigner
wearing a paper mask complete with sunglasses.
KUALA LUMPUR (March 25, 2009) :
Last minute campaigning for votes was colourful and vibrant at the Putra World Trade Centre. And certainly noisy.

At the concourse area and corridors, delegates to the Umno Youth, Wanita and Puteri assemblies today were treated like VIPs as scores of campaign workers lined the walkways, pushing campaign paraphernalia like cards with candidates' pictures and polling number.

To stand out, the teams wore different coloured T-shirts and carried placards and banners emblazoned with their candidate’s name.

At one corner, women cheerleaders screamed their candidate’s name and number, while handing out card. Others were more subtle, whispering to delegates as if passing the word around.

The aggressive campaigning actually kicked off on Tuesday evening at the joint opening of the three assemblies and escalated to a feverish pitch today.

Supporters of Pemuda chief hopefuls were the loudest.

Before voting started, a ‘cheering’ battle ensued between supporters of Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin and Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo who are fighting for the number one spot. Both their supporters wore special white T-shirts.

Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir’s supporters were more subtle but clad in black tee-shirts, they projected a more serious and matured demeanor. The T-shirts had the words “Pemuda Berani” (Brave Youths) at the back and “Berani Berubah” (dare to change) in front.

Scores of irritated delegates moved aside when the screaming and cheering started.

But many didn’t mind the pretty cheerleaders stationed near the escalators leading to the main hall.

Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar, who is vying for a vice-presidential spot in Umno on Thursday, was a busy man today, making his rounds and greeting the delegates and media personnel.

Accompanying him were several supporters who wore paper masks of his face, and his polling number.
