IT
was a night of calculated chaos at the MTV World Stage concert that took place last Saturday at Sunway Lagoon Resort.

Over 15,000 music fans were present for the first-ever MTV-produced event of its kind in order to see performances by well-known international acts from the US and Britain and even our very own rockers Estranged.

Fans were already camped out in front of the stage from the early afternoon, and not even a brief drizzle could dampen their spirit. The concert was held in the wave pool area, which was specially drained for the concert.

Hosting the event were popular MTV Asia VJs Denise, Utt and Taya, who were helped by MTV Korea VJ Sean and MTV China VJ Andy.

Estranged (right) came onstage to kickstart the event, and amidst screams of excitement, performed a rousing set of its songs Slave in Us, Ketika Ini, Yang Pernah and latest single In No Time. The boys got the crowd going and set the tone for the rest of the night.

American rock band Boys Like Girls then followed, getting plenty of screams from the girls.

The boys seemed to revel in the adoration, as they performed their first song, Love Drunk and went on to show off their music skills on Hero/Heroine and Thunder, before finishing off with one of their most popular songs, The Great Escape.

Following them were Raygun, a rising British band, who kept the crowd entertained despite being a relative unknown here.

The band took to the stage like true rock star, performing a four-song set that included its debut single, Just Because.

Next came the highly-anticipated performance by Pixie Lott, the latest British pop sensation and only female performer that night.

The blond teen singer drew plenty of appreciative cheers from the boys in the audience as she showcased her powerful vocals with renditions of her songs Turn It Up, Boys and Girls and her huge debut single, Mama Do (Uh Oh, Uh Oh).

With the crowd now at full capacity, popular American rock group Hoobastank came onstage, delighting fans with its songs My Turn, The Letter and Crawling in the Dark.

The group then performed an impromptu cover of the 80s theme song Ghostbusters, leading the crowd to chanting the famous phrase, before causing everyone to scream when it broke of into its biggest hit, The Reason.

After this performance, came All-American Rejects, clearly the biggest draw for the night. The boys burst on stage with their rocking hit Dirty Little Secret, before moving on to their new and old hits I Wanna and Swing Swing.

They also performed The Wind Blows, The Real World and their anthemic Gives You Hell, which had the crowd jumping.

Frontman Tyson Ritter, always a joker, was covered in glitter and gave his all during the show, running across the stage and climbing over the side to the cheers of the crowd.

The final performance of the night came from Kasabian, who is known for its stadium-quality rock anthems.

The boys didn’t disappoint their fans that night, throwing out hits like L.S.F. (Lost Souls Forever) and Club Foot, as well as their latest singles, Fire and Vlad the Impaler.

Kasabian concluded its performance with pyrotechnics that included the fake volcano at the back of the wave pool spewing out flames and smoke, ending the night with a literal bang.

After the concert, the lucky few who had post-party passes made their way to the nearby Euphoria by Ministry of Sound to rub shoulders with artistes and other celebrities.

There was also a performance by 2A.M., currently one of the most popular vocal groups in Korea.

Those who still had some energy left managed to party the night away.

This concert was a huge hit for MTV Asia, bringing down some of the region’s favourite artistes to perform here. With such an overwhelming positive response from the fans, hopefully this will just be the first of many similar music events for the region.

Catch the TV telecast of MTV World Stage: Live in Malaysia on MTV (Astro channel 713) on Aug 28 at 8pm.
