Harassed doctor can see DG
THANK you for enlightening us about this issue ("How to stop senior doctor on the prowl" – Letters, Nov 4). Section 15(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act states that it shall be the duty of every employer and self employed person to ensure the safety, health and welfare at work of all employees. We do not condone sexual harassment, bullying of staff, rude behaviour and indiscipline in hospitals.
The victim can make a complaint to the hospital director, the state health director or the director -general of health.
She can meet me or send an email. I will treat all complaints confidentially and carry out investigations discreetly. If there is ample evidence implicating the medical practitioner, appropriate action will be taken including referring the doctor to the Malaysian Medical Council for a disciplinary enquiry.
The complainant is free to complain directly to the Health Ministry or Malaysian Medical Council.
The Health Ministry makes every effort to ensure that hospital staff work professionally in a safe environment and welcomes feedback from the public.
Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican Director General of Health
