Serdang assemblyman referred to panel

Satim Diman

Khalid Ibrahim

SHAH ALAM (Nov 17, 2009) :
Seri Serdang state assemblyman Datuk Satim Diman will be referred to the rights and privileges committee of the Selangor state assembly after a motion to do so was passed today.

The motion was moved by Mentri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, who said that Satim had, in his speech on the state budget on Nov 11, accused him of being incompetent to manage the state.

Satim linked this to Abdul Khalid’s court case against Bank Islam, saying that “the mentri besar is incompetent and failed to even manage his own finances.”

On Friday, Abdul Khalid demanded an apology from Satim, saying the latter had made false accusations against him regarding the Bank Islam court case.

Satim, who was Deputy Speaker of the state assembly during the previous state government, alleged that Abd ul Khalid had failed to repay a RM66.6 million loan taken in 1998 to buy 200 million Guthrie shares or 20% of Guthrie Group.

Abdul Khalid said that he was in fact suing Bank Islam for a larger amount that was lost due to forced selling of the shares without his consent. The suit taken by Bank Islam against him was a counter suit but this was set aside as the legal action by Abdul Khalid was still in court.

Teng Chang Khim

Abdul Khalid demanded an apology from Satim by Monday or else face the consequences.

However, the assemblyman refused to apologise and the motion to refer him to the committee was tabled today.

In approving the motion, Speaker Teng Chang Khim said the matter would be referred to the rights and privileges committee that will then propose appropriate action to be taken against Satim.

Meanwhile, another motion calling for the federal government to set up an independent Royal Commission of Inquiry to investigate the real reasons behind the death of Selangor political aide Teoh Beng Hock was passed.

The motion was tabled by Sekinchan assemblyman Ng Suee Lim.

Teoh, who was called into the Selangor Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office on July 14 to assist in investigations against alleged abuse of assemblyman funds, was found dead the next day on the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam, nine floors below the MACC office.

An inquest is currently being held to determine who is responsible for Teoh’s death.
