Govt to nurture young talents
by Tim Leonard
BANGI (Dec 6, 2009) : The government will provide the infrastructure and facilities to ensure talented children in schools throughout Malaysia reach their fullest potential.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak said today the government will look into ways to assist these talented children and set up more Permata Pintar centres to cater to their holistic development.

He said this during the ground-breaking ceremony for the Permata Pintar complex at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in Bangi.

Najib said the government is also looking at ways to formulate the right policy to assist talented children through the Pemata Pintar progamme, and enhance early childhood education and care.

His wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, is the patron of the Permata Pintar programme.

Present were Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Khaled Nordin and UKM vice-chancellor Prof Tan Sri Dr Sharifah Hapsah Syed Hasan.

The Permata Pintar complex in UKM will be constructed over 20 acres and is expected to be completed in 2011.

Various programmes and activities, including camps, will be held at the complex to cater to talented children from all over Malaysia.

Najib and Rosmah later planted a time capsule at the site of the complex.

Rosmah was also visibly moved when a group of children brought out a birthday cake for her and asked her on stage to cut it. Rosmah's birthday falls on Thursday.

A total of 405 children, aged between nine and 16, are taking part in the Permata Pintar school holiday camp in UKM.

The inaugural camp is carried out based on the programmes formulated at the Centre for Talented Youth at John Hopkins University in the United States.

The children will also take part in IQ tests in any of their chosen three fields -- mathematics, science or creative writing.

The children's development will be monitored from time to time throughout their participation in the camp.

Five children will be shortlisted to take participate in the summer camp of John Hopkins University in June 2010.
