First party shock
I RENEWED my road tax last week for my 21-year-old car. It was a shock to me as the total expenditure was RM883. The bulk of it was for the insurance premium.
It appears that it is compulsory to buy first party insurance unless I have the car inspected at Puspakom. Why is first party necessary? I can think of two reasons: Old cars are at higher risk of being involved in accidents and subsequent claims; and are at higher risk of being stolen.
The purpose of an insurance policy is to protect against loss and especially third parties. Of what use is first party insurance to me? I have no need for that. Consumers are forced to buy something they neither need nor want.
Many people like me drive old cars as a matter of economic necessity, not of choice. New cars are not affordable. I do not keep my old car because of its vintage value but because a car is necessary and it is still in good condition. Given a choice, I would prefer a new car but money forbids.
I am sure readers would agree with me that those who use old cars are not rich. We are at the mercy of the insurance companies.
Perhaps the relevant authorities will look into this matter. The money surely benefits no one other than the insurance companies.
